phd seminar

In connection with the MIDA conference Aalborg University will host a PhD seminar. The seminar will take place at the conference venue in Copenhagen. See The seminar provides an opportunity for PhD’s to present and discuss research design, methodology and preliminary results in connection with PhD-projects on migration. The purpose of the seminar is to take an overall discussion of challenges and findings in the studies of migration in various forms: migration, mobility, circular migration and return migration to uncover similarities and differences in inclusion or exclusion in the new society. The aim is to give inspiration to the PhD project and pinpoint pitfalls, problems and ethical questions. The seminar is designed for new PhD students, who are in the beginning of their project as well as PhD’s who are more advanced in their project and who wants to reflect on their results in comparisons with results from migration seen from other perspectives.

The PhD seminar will include the following main themes:

  • Methods in migration research (including ethical and political issues)
  • Labour migration – inclusion or exclusion?
  • Place and space – transnational relations and belongings
  • Construction and reproduction of Identity

The PhD seminar ranges mainly on two levels:

  • Presentation of main themes (lectures with discussion)
  • Discussions of PhD projects, where the PhD students give a presentation of their project based on their paper for the seminar. Each presentation is followed by opposition from another PhD student and comments to the design and methodology in the projects by senior researchers present.

The discussions of the PhD student’s project will be based on a paper in English of 10 – 15 pages, which the PhD student has to deliver no later than April 01, 2016.

Paper must be submitted by EasyChair – Please follow this link to EasyChair.

There is a maximum of 12 participants at the PhD course, which gives 2 ETCS.
